Making Darmstadt sound appealing is both easy and difficult. At first glance the “Science City” in the middle of the Rhine-Main conurbation appears somewhat more modest than its big sisters Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Mainz. Yet as soon as you leave the motorway, you begin to realise that you are entering a tremendously multifaceted and endearing metropolis well worth living in. A city with many faces, a city which has a great deal to offer.
Let’s first of all consider the term “Science City”: Located around 30 kilometres to the south of Frankfurt on the edge of the Odenwald forest, the city indeed has the ability of creating knowledge. It is renowned for its Technical University and its wealth of colleges, establishments which also enjoy an excellent reputation among the experts.
At the same time, Darmstadt is a first-class location for innovative, cutting-edge companies. State and private research institutes with international reputations consolidate its reputation as a science city. This name is far more than merely an honorary title. It is the result of a fresh, lively, promising economic policy. Numerous important companies have moved here and profit from this stimulating interaction between science and the economy. From classic industries such as mechanical engineering, chemicals and cosmetics through to the New Economy.
The wide range of relaxing activities and entertainment that Darmstadt can offer is a further plus point: As a “city of culture”, Darmstadt boasts numerous theatres, museums and galleries with high standards for a discerning public. It is a city enriched with a lively variety of leisure activities. Cinemas, international bars and restaurants of all shades and styles, not forgetting all the inviting shopping facilities, come together to perfectly round off an exciting lifestyle in a city that oscillates between tradition and the modern age.
The nearby Odenwald offers enormous recreational potential. The Rhine-Main airport is also in the near vicinity. And the most attractive, greenbelt recreation areas are also less than a 30 minute drive away by car. In short: life is good in and around Darmstadt. A1 quality for living and working!
